Superstar

Tajci's smile, her youth and optimism, won the hearts of millions.

Tajci’s ‘overnight’ success happened with her appearance at Jugovizija in Zadar, Croatian in 1990. Singing “Hajde da ludujemo” (“Let’s Go Crazy”), Tajci won the hearts of the entire region. She became an overnight pop singing sensation. Twenty-two million people would recognize her photo instantly– the blond teenage girl with a huge smile. Everyone cheered for her as she represented Yugoslavia at the European Song Competition held in Zagreb, on May 5th, 1990.

Tajci’s life became a blur of TV and media appearances, tours, concerts, and performances. Her concerts were endorsed by the biggest companies in the region, sound and lighting systems were provided by the cutting edge production houses and “Vecernji list” (“Evening Paper”), Croatia’s biggest daily publication, was her media sponsor.

Adored and admired by millions Tajci lived a dream.

Between January 1990 and January 1992, Tajci recorded three albums (“Hajde da ludujemo,” “Bube u glavi,” and “Levis’ Exclusive”); her records reached Platinum and Diamond sales; she was the first celebrity in the area to ever have a doll made in her likeness; and she was awarded a prestigious Ampex Golden Reel Award.

However during those years Tajci started to experience the burdens such extraordinary fame placed on her. Identified as a pop star with artistic limitations placed on her, and the demands and rigors of celebrity and its impact on her personal life and privacy soon took their toll and left her feeling trapped and alone and spiritually empty.

During the war in the region, Tajci stayed at home, sang to raise money for medicine and food, visited wounded soldiers in hospitals and spent time visiting orphanages. She also began to take more time for herself and soon she would feel the stirrings of her own spiritual awakening.

Tajci left Croatia in January 1992 to study musical theatre in New York City’s famous “American Musical and Dramatic Academy” to grow both personally and artistically, and in her quest to find peace and purpose outside of her career.
