LET THEM FLY

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

In May of 2007 I produced the Annunciation School’s Spring Concert.

During dress rehearsal, as I watched the slide show of 8th grade graduates for the first time, I was once again moved by the passing of time.

I only got to spend a few short weeks working with these students, but in that time, as they began to open up and let their true selves come out (from behind the coolness that protects teenagers’ vulnerability and insecurities), we had made a connection. Their lives mattered to me, and I felt both nervous and excited for each of them. And it was only a fraction of what their parents were feeling that same day.

At dress rehearsal, I was planning to play instrumental music as a soundtrack for the slide show. But that night, as I practiced for the show, I decided to add a few lines to the music.

LET THEM FLY
Words & Music by Tatiana

Look at them now / you think, they grew up way too fast / it seems like it was yesterday / they were a baby in your arms.

You remember every step of the way/ as you watch them grow / and now that little child of yours / is ready to go.

With your prayers let them fly / may God keep them safe from harm / and all the angels be at their side / as they journey to make you proud.

And all the memories keep in your heart / for no matter how tall they are / he’ll always be / she’ll always be / your little child.
