I love the 4th of July. Especially in small American towns. I suspect, in a way it’s like it used to be - people getting together to eat and drink and be merry. And to get patriotic for a moment - hopefully. At least during the fireworks :]

(I am always amazed how much most guys enjoy firing a bunch of colorful explosives up into the air for no other purpose but to awe, inspire and shake up the spectators. Well, and to make reference to “bombs bursting in air”.)

I get all weak in the knees- I can’t help but think of the explosions we heard from the basements of our apartment buildings where we used to “hide” during air-raids (and mind you, I didn’t experience 10% of what some people in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina had gone through). I think of all the explosives used as I write this to take lives of ordinary people - like you and me. I get all mushy, I tear up, and I thank God I live in this country that’s free.

And I am not only talking about physical freedom. To me, American freedom is the freedom of spirit, of expression, of religion, of being able to be who ever you aspire to be without fear and social binds.
